Big Sur Cut Off After New Highway 1 Collapse

The community of Big Sur is basically cut off this morning, after a rockslide and a mudslide.

The latest rockslide happened yesterday (Thursday) near Limekiln State Park. Caltrans crews were trying to clear the slide, when a large boulder careened into a front-end loader. The slide now blocks Big Sur's access to Highway 46.

Highway 46 was the only way to get to the community, after a slide last week crumbled a section of Highway 1 north of Big Sur. That section is not expected to open until next month.

In total, about 40 miles of Highway 1 are cut off.

The collapse of a section of Highway 1 is causing trouble for the well known Big Sur International Marathon. The race is supposed to happen on May 1, but it runs right near the collapse. It may cause race officials to change the official route.
