Billionaire Steyer Endorses Feinstein's Opponent For US Senate

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- California billionaire Tom Steyer is endorsing state Sen. Kevin de Leon, the Democrat challenging U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

He could provide an influx of cash that de Leon badly needs to increase his name recognition. But Steyer tells the Los Angeles Times he doesn't have "concrete plans" yet for creating an independent expenditure group to boost de Leon.

Steyer is a former hedge fund manager and huge Democratic donor. He's now best known for championing environmental causes and calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment, an effort to which he's already committed tens of millions of dollars.

He called de Leon "the kind of young progressive that reflects California."

Campaign finance reports released Sunday show de Leon's campaign has about $670,000 on hand compared to Feinstein's more than $10 million.

Feinstein, 84, has been a U.S. senator since 1992, having been re-elected four times. She served as San Francisco's mayor from 1978 to 1988.
