WATCH: Trailer for “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution” Documentary

Stanley Nelson's documentary "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" opens in select Bay Area theaters on Oct. 2.

Nelson, whose previous film credits include "The Murder of Emmett Till," "Sweet Honey in the Rock: Raise Your Voice" and "Freedom Riders," told NPR that he started working on the documentary in 2008 and did not plan at that time that it would be released at a time when the culture of police brutality is at new heights.

"It's made people want to see the film and want to understand how this was happening 50 years ago and it's still happening now," he said.

"The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" will screen at Oakland's Piedmont Theatre, Berkeley's Shattuck Cinemas, San Francisco's Landmark Opera Plaza and San Rafael's Smith Rafael Film Center.
