Body Found After Fire at Closed East Palo Alto Refinery

EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters responding to a fire at an abandoned San Francisco Bay Area chemical refinery discovered a body.

Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman reports the fire happened early Friday at a construction trailer at the closed Romic Chemical Refinery Site in East Palo Alto.

Schapelhouman says that during the overhaul of the fire, a body was discovered among the burned out trailer shell and debris. He says there is no power to the trailers and no reason for anyone to be out there. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The gender, name and age of the victim were not released. Authorities say the victim is likely a transient who was sleeping in the trailer.

Trailers and storage containers are the only items left at the former refinery plant since it was closed and disassembled several years ago.
