Car Fire Spreads Onto Brush Along I-580 in Oakland

NBC Universal, Inc.

Firefighters battled a four-alarm brush fire near westbound Interstate 580 in Oakland Monday.

The fire was reported near the Edwards Avenue exit around 6:20 p.m. and was contained around 7:30 p.m., firefighters said.

“We were coming back from Hayward. I saw the smoke and I actually thought it was somewhere else as I got closure it was close to us I said 'oh no,'" said Donna Shields, who lives in the Oakland hills.

The fire appears to have started with a car fire, firefighters said.

"On arrival we found a vehicle on fire running up the hillside here into the high fire zone threatening homes in the Leona Quarry area," said Battalion Chief Linda Buell of the Oakland Fire Department.

Mutual aid was called, about 70 people were on scene making sure it didn't get out of control.

“For the residents coming home tonight seeing fire in the hills it causes some apprehension," said Buell. "“We have a lot of dry vegetation so it's always going to be concern for us in the hills. The hill fire is never far from our minds.”

No structured were impacted and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained at the scene to put out hot spots.
