Butchered Black Bear Found on Side of I-680

Driver in Sunol spots dead animal

State officials say the body of a butchered black bear was dumped near the highway in Sunol.

A driver saw the dead bear on Thursday near a pullout next to Interstate 680.

The Mercury News reported that the animal appears to have been legally shot, but illegally dumped, Fish and Game Warden Clint Garrett said.

It's legal for licensed hunters to shoot a bear in California during bear season as long as they have the proper paperwork, according to the state Fish and Game Department, but illegal to dump the body.

Illegal dumping falls under regular litter laws.

The bear has been removed.
