Morgan Hill police have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of attempting to kidnap a 16-year-old girl who he picked up in his cab in front of her school Thursday.
The girl, a student at Live Oak High School, went to the Police Department following the incident and informed officers that she had been waiting for the bus after school at about 11 a.m. when a man driving an Alpha Cab stopped in front of her and offered her a free ride, according to police.
The girl took the offer but grew frightened when, on the way to her destination, the cabdriver stopped on the side of the road and began to ask her personal questions, according to police.
The girl requested to be dropped off at a Staples Inc. store, according to police. When they arrived at the parking lot of the store, the cabdriver tried to grab her as she was getting out of the cab.
The girl escaped to Staples and then went to the Police Department to report the incident.
The special operations unit of the Police Department arrested the cabdriver, identified as Tarandeep Singh, of Hayward, after luring him to the Staples store at about 3:45 p.m.
Singh was booked into Santa Clara County Jail for false imprisonment, attempted kidnapping, assault with intent to commit rape and annoying and molesting a child.
