The hens can lay easy.
A Republican-led effort in Congress that would have overturned a 2008 California law requiring egg-laying hens have enough room to "lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around" has failed, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
An effort by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, to "disable" the law died on Monday following "overwhelming opposition," according to chairs of the House and Senate agriculture committees.
King's "egg amendment" would have killed off Proposition 2 via the $1 trillion farm bill, the newspaper reported. His amendment would have barred eggs from California's humane hens from being sold in other states.
King represents Iowa, which produces more eggs than any other state. Even California Republicans opposed the effort, which was dubbed a "race to the bottom."
