The clang of one of San Francisco's most beloved icons will go silent for a few months.

Starting in January the California Street cable car line will be out of commission for six months as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency makes improvements to old underground components.

Through July, the City will spend $24 million to replace the old parts and repave up to 17 blocks on California Street between Drumm Street and Van Ness Avenue.

To carry passengers, and disoriented tourists, Muni will service the line with a bus shuttle that will run from about 6 a.m. until midnight.
