State budget cuts are hitting counties hard and now local lawmakers want to pass the cost on to drivers.
A number of Bay Area transportation agencies, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and Santa Clara counties want to bump up vehicle registration fees by $10 a year.
The money would help fix potholes, improve public transit and add sidewalks to roads. A simple majority vote would be needed to pass such a measure.
Lawmakers are looking to put the measure on the November ballot.
