Alameda County Sheriff's Deputies say they were on a DUI enforcement team when they spotted a driver blowing through stop signs in Hayward overnight.
They say they tried to pull the driver over, but he sped off. There was a quick pursuit with speeds up to 55 miles an hour. Deputies say the driver blew through the intersection at Foothill and A Streets and slammed into a Safeway tanker truck. The car went under the big rig, shearing off the car's roof.
In all 5 peple were in the car. Two people died. The driver suffered only moderate injuries and is being tested for drugs and alcohol.
Deputies say the driver is in his 20s and had been on parole from the California Youth Authority and was on probation.
Busy Foothill Blvd was closed at A Street for several hours.
CHP investigators from the Major Accident Investigation Team still combed through the flattened car for hours on the Southbound side -- where the car crashed before a corner Copymat store.
A sheriff's spokesperson says he is still unclear on what charges the driver might face until blood alcohol results are back.
