Child Shot, Family Waits Five Hours to Call Cops: Police

A 10-year-old girl was hit by gunfire in an early morning shooting in Hayward, but her family did not report the incident for more than five hours, a police lieutenant said today.

Someone shot into a house on Tampa Avenue near Sumatra Street at about 2 a.m., Hayward police Lt. Mark Stuart said.

The girl, who was at the house with other family members, was struck by one of the rounds, Stuart said.

Her family called police at 7:35 a.m. and that was when she was transported to the hospital, Stuart said. She is expected to survive her injuries, he said.

Police are looking into why there was a delay in reporting the incident. "We have no clue what prompted them to wait," Stuart said.

Multiple shell casings were found outside the home but no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, he said.
