Claim: Researcher's Dog Poisoned By Pot Growers

Environmentalists believe that a researcher's dog was killed by marijuana farmers

Who killed Nyxo?

There are no suspects in the February death of ecologist Mourad Gabriel's Labrador mix, according to law enforcement.

But since the 10-year-old dog died after eating meat laced with a rat poison Gabriel had been researching, there is suspicion among some that it was marijuana growers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

A petition with 55,000 signatures was delivered to the state Attorney General's office by the Center for Biological Diversity, which called for a deeper investigation.

IIlegal pot farms often used toxic chemicals, according to the newspaper, such as the ones Gabriel is researching. Gabriel requires a law enforcement escort when visiting pot farms, the newspaper reported.

No other dogs have been similarly poisoned in the Blue Lake area, where Gabriel's home is located.
