If they can't make it rain, they can make a record.
The hardy folk of Discovery Bay in far-eastern Contra Costa County haven't seen rain in quite some time, but nobody has seen anything like the rain dance -- possibly, the world's largest -- the townspeople have planned for Feb. 8.
The officially-sanctioned event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. that day at the town's new community center.
The current record for participants in a rain dance is 395, set by the people of Maynooth in County Kildare, Ireland, on May 29, 2011.
Organizers hope to bring attention to "local water rights" in the town, which provides boat access to the nearby Delta for most of the homeowners.
Tribal people "from the local Miwok tribe have been asked... to help lead the dance," according to a release.
