Coroner ID's Man Struck, Killed by Los Angeles-Bound Amtrak Train

A man struck and killed by an Amtrak train in South San Jose on Wednesday morning has been identified as 35-year-old Julius Cannales of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The collision with Amtrak's Coast Starlight No. 11 train was reported around 10:30 a.m. on the tracks at Monterey Road and Skyway Drive, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham and Union Pacific Justin Jacobs said.

The tracks are about 5 miles south of the downtown San Jose Diridon station.

The train was traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles and was carrying crew members and 239 passengers, who didn't report any injuries, Graham said.

The collision didn't happen at a railroad crossing and investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
