Firefighters on Tuesday battled a three-alarm fire at a Public Storage facility in an industrial area near Story Road and US. Highway 101 in South San Jose.
The blaze was reported on Felipe Avenue at 6:20 a.m.
There was no immediate word how it started. No injuries were reported.
Fire crews cleared the scene by 10 a.m.
San Jose fire Capt. Cleo Doss said the units that burned were structurally unstable, so firefighters proceeded carefully.
"We have a lot of overhaul to do, basically a lot of cleaning out of material to make sure we have the fire completely out," Doss said.
Doss said all four damaged units were full of stored belongings, but he did not yet have a dollar estimate on the loss.
Smoke from the fire was visible from the nearby highways.
