Crews in Marin County are mowing down brush and the remains of dying oak trees in an effort to save a forest and reduce the threat of wildfires.
The Marin Municipal Water District and scientists from University of California, Davis are working to reduce the fuel on a ridge just north of Mount Tamalpais.
"This forest has been degraded by sudden oak death," Forest Pathologist Richard Cobb said.
Crews said getting rid of the low-lying fuel reduces the fire risk in the area.
"We're reducing the fuel load on the forest floor so it doesn't have the intensity to climb up into the canopy," said Mike Swezy of the Marin Municipal Water District.
