Crusade Against Internet Porn at SJ Libraries Flops

City Council rejects bid

The San Jose City Council has rejected a proposal to install filters on computers at the public library meant to keep visitors from accessing adult Web site.

Councilman Pete Constant has been trying to get filtering software installed on the machines at the public libraries for over a year.

A representative of the Values Advocacy Council, a local religious lobbying group, even offered to pay $40,000 to cover half the cost of the program.

However, other representatives demanded that before the city considered installing filters, it should prioritize spending on other child safety measures, including funding for police to investigate sex crimes.

Jackson West knows half a dozen ways to get around filters -- and that's probably have as many as most teenagers.
