Cupertino Homicide Suspect Arrested

A Fremont landscaper wanted for allegedly killing a Cupertino woman and severely beating her husband was arrested Tuesday night outside of  Los Angeles, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Police in Monterey Park arrested Huaichang Zhao, 45, Tuesday night at a motel after receiving an anonymous tip, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Don  Morrissey said.

Sheriff's investigators have been searching for Zhao since April 17, when he allegedly assaulted the couple in their home in the 22000 block  of Berry Court. The attack happened in front of the couple's son and daughter  and one of the children called 911 around 8:50 a.m., Morrissey said.

The wife, 41-year-old Wei Wei Li, died. Her 42-year-old husband was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities said Zhao had been doing landscaping work for the couple at their home at the time.

Sheriff's deputies have been working with police in Monterey Park after learning through an anonymous tip that Zhao had caught a ride to the  area with a friend shortly after the attack, Morrissey said.

Santa Clara County homicide detectives "walked the streets of Monterey Park going door to door, obviously in the hopes that something like  this would happen," he said.

Zhao will be arraigned in Los Angeles County and is expected to be extradited back to the Bay Area soon, Morrissey said.
