Curtain Falls on the Red Vic Tonight

An era comes to an end with a dark chuckle Monday evening.

San Francisco's iconic theater, the Red Vic Movie House, will air two finals shows Monday evening before pulling the plug on its projector.

The Red Vic will end 31 years in the movie business with two showings of the cult classic "Harold and Maude."

“It’s kind of the perfect movie. Maude makes the decision there is a time to end,” one of the original founders of the single screen theater, Betsy Rix, told the San Francisco Examiner. “Harold goes on to do great things ... we think. I’m sure he does.”

The movie tells the story of an odd relationship that develops between a morbid death-obsessed teenager and a care free elderly woman named Maude. Much of the movie takes places in the Bay Area.

But much like the movie, the story of the Red Vic must come to an end. On its 31st birthday, the theater is being forced to close after trying to raise enough money through donations to keep its doors open.

The theater opened in 1980 on the corner of Haight and Belvedere Streets before moving to its present location on Haight, between Cole and Shraeder streets.

Tickets for Monday's show are already sold out.
