Deputy Faces Sentencing for Killing 2 Cyclists

The former Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy who killed two bicyclists after falling asleep behind the wheel of his patrol car will be sentenced today.

James Council will most likely be ordered to wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet for four months, pay restitution to the families of the victims, Krisy Gough and Matt Peterson, and complete 20 weeks of community service.

Council crashed into the cyclists in Cupertino, along Stevens Canyon Road in March last year. He was demoted from his job as a law enforcement officer to a civilian position and is not allowed to drive a patrol car or carry a gun.
