Doyle Drive Reopened 8 Hours Ahead of Schedule

Doyle Drive in San Francisco reopened Sunday night at 9 p.m., eight hours ahead of schedule.

The Presidio Parkway construction team wrote on its website that "this opening marks a major milestone for a project that has transformed the northern waterfront for San Francisco, turning an aging, outdated roadway into a graceful parkway and gateway to San Francisco and the Presidio national park."

Initially, spokeswoman Molly Graham said Doyle Drive would reopen at 10 p.m. The road was scheduled to open at 5 a.m. Monday, but construction crews failed to encounter problems that could have slowed them down.

For example, crews failed to find old footings and concrete when they were preparing a new entry to Marina Boulevard.

"It will be a new driving experience for everybody Monday morning," Graham said. "The views are stunning."

Graham said drivers will rise up on low viaducts, which provide great views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

She asked drivers to be patient with any delays during the next two weeks as people get used to the new road.

The cost of the project was a little more than $1.1 billion.
