Driver Dead After Car Slams into Sign Post on Highway 4

A driver died early this morning after they lost control of their vehicle and struck a sign post on state Highway 4 in Antioch.

The crash was first reported around 1:05 a.m. on eastbound Highway 4 near Lone Tree Way, according to CHP officials.

Upon arrival, officers found a white Dodge Charger on the highway's right shoulder, resting against an exit sign for Lone Tree Way, CHP officials said.

The Charger sustained massive damage and the entire passenger compartment had been crushed. The driver of the Charger suffered massive trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

After a preliminary investigation, officers determined the Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed in the highway's eastbound lanes. For an unknown reason, the driver turned right and lost control of their vehicle, causing it to veer across all lanes and onto the right shoulder, CHP officials said.

The vehicle then struck an embankment, causing it to go airborne, before striking the sign post and ultimately coming to rest.

The Lone Tree Way off-ramp was closed for about an hour and a half as officers investigated the crash and has since reopened, according to CHP officials.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
