Driver Dies in Car Accident on Hwy 101 in San Rafael

A woman died late Saturday afternoon in a solo vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A 1995 Geo Prizm was headed north on 101 just south of the Central San Rafael exit at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday when the female driver lost control and drifted left into the center divider, said CHP Officer Andrew Barclay.

The Prizm then veered back to the right, across all northbound traffic lanes and into the right-hand shoulder guard rail, Barclay said.

The woman was taken to Marin General Hospital, where she died a short time later. Further information about the woman was not available Saturday night.

A male passenger in the Geo suffered minor injuries, Barclay said.

The crash is under investigation, and Barclay said a rain-slick roadway may have been a contributing factor.
