Dumbarton Bridge to Close Memorial Day Weekend

The closure will help the bridge's safety in a major earthquake.

Attention drivers: the Dumbarton Bridge will be closed Memorial Day weekend.

Caltrans says it has to shut down the entire span so that it can do a seismic retrofit.

Over the three-day closure, Caltrans will replace a major expansion joint on the western side of the bridge across all six lanes of traffic. Specifically, crews will reinforce the existing concrete slab bridge, replace major deck joints, and install seismic bearings.

The bridge will not be available to drivers from late Friday, May 25 through early Tuesday May 29.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. Caltrans suggests Highway 237 and Highway 92 via the San Mateo Bridge as alternates. So the rest of us should try to avoid those roads as well as they will be clogged with people avoiding the Dumbo.

The Dumbarton Bridge is 1.6 miles long and connects the cities of Menlo Park in San Mateo County to Fremont in Alameda County.

Some 60,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day. The existing structure opened in 1982, replacing the 1927 Dumbarton Bridge.
