An Oakland police officer was arrested by the department on suspicion of stalking and threatening a city employee formerly involved in a relationship with the officer, authorities said Monday.

The officer could face charges including misdemeanor stalking, criminal threats and making annoying and harassing phone calls, according to a statement from the Oakland Police Department.

The department did not identify the officer in custody.

Police have opened criminal and internal affairs investigations. The Community Police Review Board will also investigate.

"We share this information with our community and reaffirm our commitment to transparency, accountability and the interest of equal justice," the police statement said. "Department members will continue to hold each other accountable and will act swiftly to report any criminal and/or policy violations to the Police Department and the City of Oakland."

Police are working with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office to review the case and determine possible charges.
