A deadly accident shut down eastbound Interstate 580 in San Leandro for ten hours Saturday night.
According to the CHP, it was a case of homicide. The collision involved a motorcyclist and a paratransit van who got in some kind of altercation while driving.
The incident was reported shortly before 4 p.m., and closed all lanes on eastbound I-580 just west of 150th Avenue until about 2 a.m..
CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said road rage between the motorcycle rider and the paratransit van driver sparked the initial collision. The van driver hit the motorcyclist. It was initially reported that the van then dragged the man for more than a mile. Investigators said Sunday it was not clear if the rider was dragged or hit by another car after colliding with the van. The motorcycle itself was dragged for more than a mile and remained attached to the undercarriage of the van when it pulled over.
The motorcyclist died of his injuries. The paratransit van did not have any passengers. The driver was arrested after attempting to run away from the scene, according to police.
Police did not immediately identify the cyclist, but he is believed to be a member of the Hells Angels gang. The group who was riding alongside him wore Hells Angels jackets, according to witnesses.
