Elderly Big Sur Woman Thwarts 2 Suspects' Rape and Robbery Attempt with Firearm

An elderly woman took hold of a firearm to scare off two men who entered her Big Sur home and attempted to rape her on Sunday, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Around 9 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a report of an attempted home invasion in the 37000 block of Garrapatos Road, about 2 miles east of State Route 1, sheriff's officials said.

Two men armed with knives entered the home and made their way into a bedroom, where they tried to rob and rape an elderly woman, sheriff's officials said, adding that the the woman was able to defend herself with a firearm.

Deputies have not arrested the men. Both suspects are described as Hispanic men in their mid 20s standing between 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 4 inches tall, sheriff's officials said.

The first suspect weighs between 120 and 130 pounds and the second suspect weighs between 185 and 200 pounds, according to sheriff's officials.
