The family of a shoplifting and carjacking suspect shot and killed by Emeryville police officers who followed her into Oakland in February is taking the department to court over the killing.
The family of Yuvette Henderson says it is planning to file a federal lawsuit. Details of the suit were to be unveiled at a press conference Thursday.
Emeryville police confronted Henderson, 38, on Feb. 3 after reports of a carjacking at a the Home Depot at 3838 Hollis Street. A witness claimed Henderson pointed a gun at officers, leading them to open fire.
Henderson’s family does not believe the witness’s account and is demanding the release of surveillance video that may have captured the confrontation.
Several protests were staged in the area of the shooting and at the Home Depot in the following weeks, claiming the officers used a military-style assault rifle during the shooting.
