Escapee, Jail Guard Captured in Vallejo

SWAT teams in Vallejo arrested a North Carolina fugitive Sunday, along with a female jailer who allegedly helped him escape, Vallejo  police said today.

Jeffrey Miles was one of six suspects arrested in connection with a double homicide in Swain County, N.C. He was in county jail awaiting trial when he allegedly befriended Officer Anita Key Vestal, Vallejo police said.

Miles sweet-talked Vestal enough to convince her to give him the keys to unlock the holding pod on March 21.  Next, he slipped through a locked fence surrounding the facility, police said.

The Swain County Sheriff's Office contacted Vallejo police earlier this month and said Miles had possible connections to Vallejo, Vallejo police Lt. Abel Tenorio said. Vestal was trained and working as an officer for about eight months at the time of the escape, and was in charge that day, Swain County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Gardner told the Vallejo Times Herald.

An alert went out to officers in the area to be on the lookout for Miles and Vestal. They were also featured on America's Most wanted, police said.

Miles was spotted shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Porter Street. SWAT teams from Vallejo and Benicia arrested him after brief  foot chase, Tenorio said.

Vestal was arrested without incident in a motel in the 100 block of Lincoln Road East, police said.

They were both booked into Solano County jail and are awaiting  extradition, Tenorio said.
