Fatal police shooting in South San Francisco under investigation

NBC Universal, Inc.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Thursday that his office will independently review a fatal shooting by police in South San Francisco on Wednesday evening.

Bonta said the investigation is pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506, a 2020 law that requires the state Department of Justice to investigate any shootings by law enforcement in California that result in the death of an unarmed civilian.

A man in his 40s died after allegedly pointing a replica firearm at police Wednesday, prompting two officers from the South San Francisco Police Department and one officer from the San Bruno Police Department to shoot him.

Officers had responded around 7 p.m. Wednesday to a report of someone trying to break into a public restroom in the 300 block of Oyster Point Boulevard while holding a metal object and shouting obscenities, South San Francisco police said.

He was still allegedly trying to break into the restroom when officers approached. The man then fled on foot with what appeared to be a firearm in his hand and officers followed him along a public trail, according to police.

Officers used "less-lethal options" to try to subdue the man but they were ineffective and he then allegedly pointed his weapon at them, prompting the officers to discharge their firearms, police said in a statement.

The man was hit by the gunfire and died at the scene. No officers were injured and investigators determined that his firearm was a replica. The names of the man and the officers who shot him are not yet being released.

Local authorities notified the state Department of Justice about the shooting and the DOJ's Special Prosecutions Section will review the case, Bonta's office said.
