Feinstein Joins Gay Marriage Supporters

Senior senator films "No on 8" ad

With less than a week before Californians decide whether or not same-sex couples will be allowed to continue to marry each other, the state's senior senator has made her opinion publicly known.

In a new TV ad paid for by gay marriage supporters, Sen. Dianne Feinstein says, "Proposition 8 would be a terrible mistake for California. It's about discrimination and we must always say NO to that."

The initiative proposes to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. The California Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage is legal earlier this year.

"We are so moved to have the strong, trusted and independent voice of Senator Feinstein joining the chorus of those voting no on 8," said Patrick Guerriero, Campaign Director for No on Prop 8.

"In my lifetime, I've seen discrimination.  And I see it again in Proposition 8.  Proposition 8 would be a terrible mistake for California.  It changes our Constitution -- eliminates fundamental rights -- and treats people differently under the law."

The ad will air throughout the state of California.

Proposition 8 is stirring up more than emotions. It's also stirring up loads of cash.

Campaign finance records show total contributions of more than $60 million, coming from more than 64,000 people in all 50 states and 20 foreign countries.
