Fire in the Snow

KIRKWOOD, Calif. -- Kirkwood Mountain Resort fully reopened its slopes Sunday after a powerhouse fire cut off electricity to the entire Sierra community Friday..

Officials say power was restored to the ski resort late Saturday afternoon and all lifts were in operation again by 9 a.m. Sunday. The resort near South Lake Tahoe closed early Friday afternoon after the fire destroyed the interior of a 10,000-square-foot power plant. Kirkwood officials say a filter in the engine of a power generator overheated and touched off the fire in the powerhouse's roof.

Kirkwood is located just off Highway 88 in Alpine County.
