Bomb Squad on Scene of Fire on I-280 in Redwood City: CHP

Sig-alert issued for all northbound lanes as specialists check suspicious backpack that caught fire

The San Mateo County Sheriff's bomb squad investigated a suspicious backpack that caught fire Thursday evening on Interstate 280 near Redwood City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was first reported around 6:43 p.m. on northbound 280 near Edgewood Road.

The CHP said after the fire was extinguished, the backpack needed to be X-rayed to ensure that it could be safely removed from the roadway.

A Sig-alert was issued at 7:04 p.m. for all northbound lanes of the roadway, which remained closed until about 8:15 p.m.

Traffic was diverted at Farm Hill Boulevard. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
