Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Blaze at San Jose Auto Shop

Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at a San Jose auto repair shop, fire officials said, which forced several evacuations at a nearby apartment and a late-night power outage in the Calle Willow Business District.

"We had arcing wires," Fire Capt. Mitch Mallow said, describing the fallout from the fire.

The fire was first reported at 8:56 p.m. Sunday at Willow Street and South Almaden Avenue at an auto repair garage. Fire officials said there were no injuries. But a power pole loomed dangerously close to the shop, and the shop was red-tagged because it was at risk of collapse.

Fire officials asked people to avoid the area. On Monday morning, Almaden Road between Willow Street and Goodyear, near Washington Elementary School, was still closed.
