Oakley Brush Fire Burns 58 Acres, Destroys 2 Buildings

Evacuation orders have been lifted after fire crews stopped the forward progress of a vegetation fire burning in unincorporated Oakley on Wednesday afternoon, according to Contra Costa County officials.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 5000 block of Sellers Avenue shortly after noon, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District said. The fire was burning in open space with barns and other buildings.

The blaze prompted evacuations and a preemptive power shutoff for 5,600 customers in the area near Derby Road and Sellers Avenue. County emergency officials said as of shortly before 4 p.m. that all evacuation orders have been lifted.

The fire, which burned an estimated 58 acres, was risky because of the wind and eucalyptus trees in the area, Fire Marshal Steve Aubert said.

There is also not a municipal water system in the area, so water was brought in with tankers to handle the fire.
