Woman Pedestrian Struck By, Trapped Under Muni Bus in SF

A woman was hit by a Muni bus and became trapped underneath it on Market Street on Monday evening, San Francisco fire officials said.

Around 7:15 p.m., the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a report of a crash with at least one victim at Market and Third streets, an intersection with a history of pedestrian accidents.

Witnesses said the woman was running across the street as the Muni bus was approaching the intersection and was hit.

"A lady got hit by the bus and she was trapped underneath it screaming," witness Allison Fano said.

Firefighters and bystanders rescued the trapped woman from under the bus, and she was transported to a trauma center, fire officials said. Her condition was not known.

The busy intersection was shut down for more than three hours as the accident was cleared and investigated. The closure forced buses to be rerouted and traffic to back up. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.

Those who live and work in the area say it's dangerous.

"Many times, I would hear screeching, and you look out the window, and I always say if I see them limping to the corner, they probably ran the red light," Fano said.

San Francisco police were investigating the accident late Monday night.
