Fireplaces at Risk in New Clean Air Plan

The Bay Area Air District will consider offering incentives to get polluting cars off the road and dozens of other measures to clean up the region's air under a plan it adopted Wednesday.

The 2010 Clean Air Plan also calls on the agency to consider requiring dairies to reduce methane gas emissions and homeowners to upgrade or replace their fireplaces before selling their homes.

In total, the plan includes 55 measures for consideration and calls for an additional 18 to be studied. The goal is to reduce smog, soot, greenhouse gases and toxic air contaminants in the nine-county region.

The clean air plan is updated every three years. Air district Executive Director Jack Broadbent said for the first time this year measures were evaluated for their potential to reduce multiple pollutants.
