First Real Rain of the Year Heading Our Way

After a record dry January and February, March will see a few rain drops

This morning was the 'calm before the storm' as we woke up to mostly sunny skies to start Tuesday.

You can expect increasing clouds and southerly winds ahead of a cold front due in tonight across the Bay Area.

Winds should increase to 15-30 mph with higher gusts near the hills and coastline.

The rain will start to fall in the North Bay by the afternoon. The system will move southward through the evening and bring heavy rain to the entire region.

Because there is cooler air aloft, there is also a chance for some hail and thunder tonight and into Wednesday.

The stormy condition will stick around for the rest of the work week, but will clear out in time for the weekend. Rain totals were be over an inch in the North Bay and the Santa Cruz mountains. The valleys will get between .25 inch to .75 inches of rain.

Snow levels will begin to drop to near 3,000 feet Wednesday and Thursday.

The storm is expected to bring much needed snow to the Sierra. By the weekend, ski resorts could be measuring in the new powder in feet.

More than a foot is expected at elevations above 5,000 feet by Thursday morning.
