San Francisco's mobile meal-dealers -- the ever-popular food trucks, to which downtown lunch crowds swarm -- are drawing rave reviews from foodies and rage from downtown's immobile merchants, who say the trucks are -- gasp! -- taking their jobs.
So restaurant and building owners in the Financial District are fighting back and asking city officials to tell the food trucks -- which "create unfair competition," they say -- to hit the road, according to reports.
An appeal today will be heard on Doc's of the Bay, which wants a permit to park near California and Beale streets and grill burgers. Building owners at 101 California and 25 Beale Streets say no way.
Among the restaurants appealing Doc’s permit are Portico Restaurant, Sellers Markets and The Plant Café, according to Bay City News.
Since March, 16 new food truck permits have been issued.
Doc's wants to park in the FiDi just one day a week for eight hours a day, the newspaper reported. It already has permits to work in the Mission District and at the Transamerica Pyramid -- but those permits are on hold until the appeal is heard, meaning Doc's is grounded.
“If a restaurant is concerned about a truck being there one day a week for one lunch, they’ve got other issues,” said co-owner Lauren Smith.
