A former National Football League player died in a shooting at a home in Richmond on Wednesday afternoon, a police sergeant said.
Terrell Roberts, 38, a former defensive back for the Cincinnati Bengals, died in a shooting reported at about 4:10 p.m. in the 1200 block of Fascination Circle, according to Richmond police Sgt. Enrik Melgoza.
Officers arrived and found Roberts in the backyard of the home with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Melgoza said.
Investigators determined the shooting happened in the garage after a disturbance between Roberts and the suspect, and Roberts then stumbled out to the backyard where officers found him.
Police do not yet know if Roberts knew the suspect, described as a black man between 20 and 35 years old who is bald with a short beard, weighs about 250 pounds and wore a black T-shirt, Melgoza said.
Roberts graduated from El Cerrito High School and played college football at Oregon State University. He signed in 2003 with the Bengals, who released him two years later.
