Four New Victims Step Forward in Fat Flushing Doctor Case

Along with allegedly smoking a cigar during one procedure, the man later flushed six pounds of fat down a woman's toilet.

Four new victims have come forward to say they were victims of a San Francisco man who allegedly posed as a doctor and illegally performed medical procedures, including lip and buttock augmentations, prosecutors said today.

Carlos Guzmangarza, 49, also known as Carlos Guzman, allegedly operated Derma Clinic, a dermatology clinic in the 2500 block of Mission Street, and assumed the identity of a physician's assistant with a name similar to his, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.

He pleaded not guilty in December to charges stemming from allegations that he performed liposuction on a woman.

Along with allegedly smoking a cigar during the procedure, Guzmangarza later came to the woman's home to flush six pounds of her fat down her toilet, prosecutors said.

Two other victims came forward in January and early February, and four more have come forward since then, saying he performed procedures such as facelifts and lip and buttock augmentations, according to the district attorney's office.

As a result, prosecutors today filed a motion to amend the criminal complaint against Guzmangarza, adding new charges that include allegations that he sexually assaulted one of the victims during a procedure.

Guzmangarza is now charged with nine felony counts of practicing medicine without a license, six felony counts of assault and two counts of battery for the various procedures he allegedly performed on the seven victims, prosecutors said.

He also faces three felony counts of false impersonation, two counts of identity theft, seven counts of grand theft, two felony counts of sexual battery on an unconscious victim, one misdemeanor count of sexual battery against someone's will and other sexual assault charges.

"There are strict laws that forbid individuals from performing medical procedures if they are not a licensed medical professional," District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement.

"The addition of four victims creates an even stronger case against the defendant," Gascon said.

Guzmangarza now faces 29 years in state prison if convicted of all charges. His bail was increased today to $1 million and he will next return to court on April 11.

Anyone who was treated by Guzmangarza at the Derma Clinic is asked to contact investigator Douglas Becker of the Medical Board of California at (408) 437-3680 or Lt. Carlos Sanchez of the district attorney's office at (415) 551-9569.
