Free Rides, Tows Service Offered for Christmas, New Year's Eve

Impaired drivers, including those who aren't AAA members, can get a free ride and tow from the company as long as the destination is within 10 miles

Government officials are offering free public transportation and are teaming up with Bay Area restaurants and tow companies to discourage drunk driving this holiday season.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will offer free public transit on New Year's Eve, the agency said this week.

And tow company AAA announced Thursday that its holiday Tipsy Tow service starts at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve in Northern California. It will run until 6 a.m. Christmas day.

Impaired drivers, including those who aren't AAA members, can get a free ride and tow from the company as long as the destination is within 10 miles.

Six Santa Cruz County restaurants are offering free non-alcoholic drinks to patrons who are getting a ride with a designated driver, according to the county.

Those restaurants are Bay Bar and Grill, Beach Street Pizza and Bar, Brady's Yacht Club, Bruno's Bar and Grill, Imura Japanese Restaurant and the Jury Room.

Nearly 100 more bars and restaurants are promoting the "Choose Your Ride" campaign with coasters and cards reminding patrons to make a plan to get home safely.

The California Highway Patrol will ramp up DUI enforcement over Christmas and New Year's Eve, and will hold a DUI checkpoint on New Year's Eve.
