Fremont Casting Call for Role in Film Starring James Franco

Open casting call in Fremont for an Afghan man in his late 20s, early 30s.

Independent filmmakers are looking in the Bay Area for their next star -- and he must be Afghan. Or Afghan-looking.

The makers of "The Fixer" -- directed by Ian Olds and starring James Franco -- are hosting an open casting call from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, in Fremont to find the actor to portray its lead character, Osman.

The film is about a 28-year-old former war journalist who accepts a job as a "petty crime reporter" at  a small newspaper in a bohemian town in Northern California. His experiences in Afghanistan behind him, he nonetheless becomes drawn into conflict when he tries to turn his "menial job" overseeing the police blotter into something bigger.

We'll let the producers explain: In Osman's new town, "sex is casual, true friendship is hard to come by, and an unfamiliar form of violence burbles up all around him."

The film is written and directed by Olds, a journalist by trade, and Osman will star opposite Franco and Melissa Leo.

Those interested in the role should show up at 39155 Liberty St. in Fremont between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bring a photo of yourself you don't mind giving away, a pen, and a resume. Wait times will be determined by turnout.

"No experience necessary!" the casters say. "If you have an instinct to try, just come!"

Filming is scheduled to begin in California this summer.
