Fremont Mother, Daughter, 4, Injured in Fremont Head-On Crash

A 4-year-old girl and her 33-year-old mother were taken to the hospital Monday morning in critical condition after the mother crashed her Honda into an oncoming Toyota Camry, Fremont police said.

And in a second Fremont accident, a man was killed by a driver in a Corvette at Washington Boulevard and Olive Avenue about 6:30 a.m.

In the first crash, the daughter, who was in a car seat that police said was not attached to the car, is still battling for her life, Fremont Police Officer Tony Tassano told NBC Bay Area.

The mother was upgraded to "critical but stable" condition. Police said they are investigating whether the mother was under the influence of alcohol. Police took a blood alcohol sample at the hospital and are awaiting results. One witness said the woman appeared to be driving her silver Honda between 50 to 60 mph in a 40 mph zone.

The crash was reported on Osgood Road between Blacow Road and Auto Mall Parkway about 12:15 a.m., and the area was shut down for about six hours as police investigated.

Tassano said the mother was in the southbound lane and ended up driving into the northbound lanes on Osgood, crashing into an oncoming Toyota Camry. The Camry was driven by a man in his 30s.

Police said that man said he had a few drinks and was arrested and released on misdemeanor DUI charges. He suffered from some leg pain, but was released from the scene.

The mother had not been arrested as of early Monday morning.
