Two East Bay high schools were placed under lockdown today after a person was reportedly seen with a gun at one of the schools.
Newark police placed students at Bridgepoint High School under lockdown at about 12:35 p.m., according to Liz Warren, assistant to the superintendent at Newark Unified School District.
She said school officials called police after hearing that there was someone on campus with a weapon. The lockdown was lifted at 3:20 p.m. and police were releasing students five at a time to go home for the day, Warren said.
Bridgepoint, located at 35753 Cedar Blvd. in Newark, is a continuation school with an enrollment of about 115 students.
A couple hours later, there was a separate lockdown at Kennedy High School, located at 39999 Blacow Road in Fremont.
The lockdown at Kennedy was in effect from about 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Fremont police Lt. Mark Devine said.
Devine said Fremont police also assisted at Bridgepoint, where a student reportedly passed a gun to another student.
He said a student was detained at Kennedy, but he didn't know if police recovered any weapons or if the student was connected to the Bridgepoint lockdown.
Sharon Coco, an administrative assistant in the superintendent's office at Fremont Unified School District, said police had placed Kennedy under lockdown as a precautionary measure.
"There was nothing going on inside or on the perimeter. It was outside of campus," Coco said.
