Fremont Police Arrest Men After Allegedly Stealing Gold Necklaces Off Women's Necks

Two Newark men were arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of grabbing gold chains off women's necks last week - a recurring crime in southern Alameda County, Fremont police said.

Milo Anderson, 25, and Michael Hilburn, 20, were arrested at 12:28 p.m. in Maybird Circle, after detectives spotted them in a parked car, police said in a statement. They were booked into jail on two robbery counts.

Police said the first theft was reported on Friday at 2:36 p.m. when a 46-year-old woman was stopped near Maybird Circle and Shattuck Drive by a man who said "hello" and yanked the gold chain from her neck. He then jumped into a silver car with rear damage.
About three hours later, a man ran up behind a 34-year-old woman and grabbed a chain from her neck, shoving her to the ground, while she was walking near Maybird Circle and Diamond Common, police said. That man ran to a getaway car and took off.

The suspect and suspect vehicle was similar in both cases, police said. A witness took a photo of the vehicle as it fled the scene.

Similar crime sprees have been reported in Silicon Valley cities, such as Sunnyvale, Fremont and Santa Clara, over the last several years, especially among women who hail from India and wear gold family heirlooms and gifts as a daily cultural symbols.
