Two Fremont residents trying to stop four suspected burglars from swiping a car in their driveway were injured early Sunday when they were shot by one of the suspects, police said.
The two male victims were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, but the four suspects managed to get away, according to police.
According to Fremont police Sgt. Rob Alexander, at 2:43 a.m. police received a report of an interrupted auto burglary in the area of Summit Drive and Mello Way.
The victims told police they heard commotion coming from outside. As they stepped outside, they found four people burglarizing a car in their driveway, according to police.
While the victims jumped into action, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot both men at least one time each.
The four suspects in the case fled the scene on foot and remain at large, according to police. They did leave a vehicle at the scene.
The suspects were described as two men and two women, all in their 20s, Alexander said.

One neighbor said he was surprised to learn about the shooting, noting that the area is typically quiet.
"It's weird," Justin Marshall said. "It's crazy. I've been here for 30 years, you know, you hear about these random, little car break-ins but never shootings, nothing like that."
