Hazmat crews responded to Oakland International Airport Tuesday morning after an unknown substance began off-gassing in luggage, sending some airport workers to the hospital, according to Oakland fire officials.

The incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m. and eventually was placed under control, fire officials said.

It was not clear what the gaseous substance was or how many workers were affected.

No further details were immediately available.
