Gay Marriage Advocates Slam Kardashian “Sanctity” Of Marriage

The same people who oppose same-sex marriage called out the spectacle of reality TV star Kim Kardashian's marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries as offensive to the sanctity of marriage. Or at least they would if they had any consistency, same-sex marriage advocates said Wednesday.

Same-sex marriage advocates, on the offensive since 2008's Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage in California, say the episode highlights the hypocrisy inherent in the marriage debate. It is divorce, not two men marrying, that threatens marriage's sanctity, writes David Badash in a blog post on The New Civil Rights Movement.

"The Right continues to push the illogical and down-right false concept that same-sex marriage threatens opposite sex marriages, because, as they claim, two men or two women, madly in love, cannot possibly understand the true love and God’s divine idea of a civil marriage between one man and one woman," Badash wrote. "True love and God’s divine idea of a civil marriage between one man and one woman, like, for example, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries."

The Kardashian marriage lasted 72 days, but each was a media event. The lavish ceremony itself cost over $10 million -- but the "happy couple" also cashed in with a hefty profit, selling the rights to the ceremony for $17.9 million, the blog reported.

Badash lists other spectacularly failed celebrity marriages, from the brief to the multiple-marriages, as further fuel for the fire that same-sex marriage has nothing to do with the institution's "sanctity," which has been long-lost.

"Divorce is what threatens marriage -- not gay marriage," he wrote. "It’s time to stomp out this nasty lie, once and for all."
